Music at Monoux is a thriving activity and the department is becoming a major centre for music courses in the area. There are numerous talented instrumentalists and singers within the College who take part in a wide variety of activities, which include:
Jazz Choir
The Jazz Choir has a reputation of excellence within the borough. The repertoire performed covers all genres, including arrangements of contemporary Pop songs, Rock Music and Jazz standards. The choir has won festivals and often performs in external gigs and concerts. All singers are welcome to audition.
Chamber Orchestra
This ensemble is for classical players of strings, wind, brass and percussion instruments, and performs works by composers such as Williams, Mozart, Faure and Saint-Saens.
Entry standard is around Grade 4/5.
Steel Pans
The College has a steel pan group run by an expert tutor. Students are welcome to join, but will need previous experience.
Jazz Band
Musicians are encouraged to join the Jazz Band, as either part of the rhythm section or as a front line sax, clarinet or brass player. The repertoire is mainly swing or be-bop. Players must be able to read music.
Rock Music
The College has a number of excellent Rock bands. Within the department we have drum kits and amplifiers to enable rehearsals. Students use the recording facilities to put together demos.
Instrumental Lessons
The College can offer free instrumental lessons to students keen to continue with their instruments. Although preference is given to students requiring tuition as part of their A Level courses, everyone is welcome to apply.
Concerts and outings
The department regularly organises trips to concerts and shows. Outings have included visits to the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne, Royal Albert Hall, West End Shows and Seminars. Concerts at Monoux are a regular feature each term, presenting a wide variety of music, from Classical to Rock.
