Introduction to course

This one year course is designed to develop your skills in Art and Design through a range of practical projects including:

  • Painting
  • Drawing
  • Printing
  • 3D Work
  • Photography
  • Textiles
  • Writing about artists
  • Researching the Creative Industries

You will also study the background to all Art and Design practice and you will be encouraged to develop your own pathway within Art and Design.

Course Details

The Level 2 BTEC Diploma is made up of eight units.  Six of these are core units which look at drawing, sculpting, contextual studies, planning a project, researching the creative industries and creating a final art or design piece.  The other two units look at working with various specialist media.   You will have the opportunity to create work of your own choice as well as learning through workshops and class activities.  You will be expected to maintain a sketchbook throughout the course describing your studies and giving details of tasks you have completed.  The Level 2 BTEC Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSEs.  To give you the best chance to suceed and progress you will also be required to study for  Adult Literacy  Level 1-2.  

Entry Requirements

4 GCSE grades D - E are normally required including English. Alternatively, a MERIT grade at BTEC Introductory level or GNVQ Foundation, in a relevant vocational area, would also be appropriate.

Where the course lead

During the course you will produce a portfolio of artwork that can lead to a higher level course in Art and Design which includes Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Art and Design.

This course combines well with

English or Maths GCSE.

This course is not suitable with

Other Level 2 BTEC Diploma Courses.

Course Assessment

This course is 100% coursework.  Your work will be assessed through discussion with your teacher, review of your written and visual work by your teacher or classmates and presenting your work in class.
