Access keys
Most browsers support jumping to specific links by typing keys defined on the web site. On Windows, you can press ALT + an access key; on Macintosh, you can press Control + an access key.
All pages on this site define the following access keys:
- Access key 1 - Home page
- Access key A - Admissions
- Access key C - Courses
- Access key J - Jobs
- Access key G – Contact us
- Access key 0 - This accessibility statement
- Access key D – Disability statement
- Access key T – Toggle text only theme
Standards compliance
Most pages are WCAG Double-A approved, complying with all priority 1 and 2 guidelines of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. The homepage may not comply with certain guidelines as it contains dynamic scripts and scripts to make the page more usable for all users.
All pages validate as XHTML 1.0 Transitional apart from the home page. All necessary steps will be taken to ensure that every page validates and complies in future. You can validate any page by clicking on the W3C logo on the bottom of every page.
All pages use structured semantic markup. H1 tags are used for main titles, H2 tags for subtitles.
Navigation aids
All navigational links are created using unordered list. This will enable a user to jump from one link to another in chronological order.
Links
Wherever possible, links are written to make sense out of context. Many browsers (such as JAWS, Home Page Reader, Lynx, and Opera) can extract the list of links on a page and allow the user to browse the list, separately from the page.
Link text is never duplicated; two links with the same link text always point to the same address.
Images
All content images used in this site include descriptive ALT attributes, which show when you rollover an image or screen readers will read them out.
Visual design
This site uses cascading style sheets for visual layout.
This site uses only relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified "text size" option in visual browsers. For example, if you're using Internet Explorer, you can make your default text size larger under the "View" menu, "Text Size", "Larger" (or "Largest").
If your browser or browsing device does not support style sheets at all, the content of each page is still readable.
There are several themes that users can choose depending on their visual preference. I have created an additional theme which only displays texts. This is particularly good for users using screen readers or users with difficulties with reading.
Browser compatibility
The college website has been developed with cross browser compatibility in mind. All pages have been tested on the following browsers:
- Internet Explorer 7 and 8
- Firefox
- Chrome
- Safari
- Opera
- And Netscape
Please note that I have stopped support for Internet Explorer 6 as it requires hack codes in the CSS to display PNG files. This on the other hand fails CSS validation.
Print feature
There is a print feature on all the pages. This print feature will only print texts and pictures will be ignored. This will save the user from wasting unnecessary ink or paper.
